During my observation at the middle school and high school, I observed that neither of my CT have a routine method for ending their class. Which does seem to be a bad thing they always end the class with a smooth conclusion, sometimes it is simply pick up their lab materials, assign homework, or conclude the lesson with a quick review and wrap up of the lesson. Time managment is very important part of a sucessful lesson. I do think it is important to conclude the lesson with a brief overview and question time when approporiate. It is important for studnets to feel like what they just worked on is important and relevant. A very simple way to accomplish this is to conclude and highlight the important information of the lesson. One of my first goals when a begin student teaching is to get into a routine so the students are clear and know what to expect on a daily basis. My middle school CT assigns homework in the very begining of class so the last five minutes she doesn't have to scramble and make sure the students wrote down what they need to do. I like this idea, I think it is a great way for the students to know upfront what they will be doing and it avoids confusion at the end of the period. IT is important to be aware of how much time is left in order to allow enough time to clean up and so the end of the class is not rushed.
